Dream It, Build It!  I wonder how many people will look out the windows of their offices today wishing they were doing something else. I don't mean laying on a white sandy beach soaking up the warm sunshine. I mean engaged in life, making a living doing something they really enjoy doing. Is that you? Are you the one of many who slog their way from Monday to Friday so you can enjoy weekend? In between chores around the house, that is.

Life turned out very different than what we imagined back in high school didn't it? Why is that? Did we have unrealistically high expectations? Or did we give up too soon on our own dreams and settle for other people's ideas of how we should live our lives? The older I get, the more I believe the latter.

I think most of us have been handed a pre-made template for life that goes something like: "Grow up, go to college, get a degree, land a good job, climb the ladder, save and invest for the future, then RV your way into the sunset." Of course, fall in love, get married, have 2.4 kids gets mixed in somewhere too. Sound familiar? It might read well on paper, but most of us who've followed this plan live with a quiet and lingering dissatisfaction with life. And if you're a believer, someone who's serving God as best you can, you probably have an added layer of guilt to go with that dissatisfaction. "I'm a Christian," you say to yourself. "I'm supposed to be happier than this!"

Most of us have been taught from birth to get a good job, be a good worker, and be a good employee. Color within the lines, play it safe and don't break the rules. That has it's place for sure, but it shouldn't be our end goal. Being our best at what we love doing, living life to the fullest while pleasing God and inheriting eternal life sounds like a much better plan to me!

On the next post, I'll go into more details of my own experiences about carving out one's own niche. After several years of video production, I can say with a smile that I love working from home for myself. It has its ups and downs like everything else, but there are far more ups than downs in my opinion. And all the more reason why I decided to continue on and branch out into countdowns, backgrounds, and ads!
